MHE at the WPA World Congress of Psychiatry 

MHE was invited to participate in the World Psychiatric Associations Congress in Berlin to address a key note speech on human rights and host two symposia.

Moderated by Director Maria Nyman and Senior Policy Adviser Stijn Jannes, the first symposium focused on providing quality mental health support in the context of the migration "crisis". Speakers included Dr Jessica Tilley, who talked about her experiences as a general practitioner on a refugee camp in Greece, Warsame Ali from the Norway Centre for Migration and Minority studies who talked about psychoeducation for newly arrived youth at risk of mental ill health, and Marie Sijbrandij, from the VU University of Amsterdam who presented the WHO model on low-intensity treatments aimed at reducing signs if of common mental problems and how it is used  in the current migration context. 

The second symposium was dedicated to e-mental health, entitled ‘E-mental health is invading your world: how to discern quality from charlatanism’.  Speakers included Dr Jan Philipp Klein who discussed quality criteria for internet-based interventions. Dr Paul Koeck presented an online self-help programme and Frank Schalken introduced the participants to the world of apps.

Finally, Professor emeritus in Psychiatry and MHE Senior Policy Advisor Stijn Jannes hold a keynote speech on Human Rights in Psychiatry which challenged the current state of play in mental health service provision and called for a paradigm shift towards the social model of mental health and psychiatry.
