Why join Mental Health Europe?

In recent years the benefits and the necessity of having a European voice for mental health have become more and more evident. MHE sees this evidence clearly and therefore offers an opportunity and a path for every organisation that wants to contribute to the building of Europe, in the European Union and in the larger Europe.

MHE supports the capacity building, participation and emancipation of different groups in the mental health field in order to establish equal partnership and opportunities among the different parties and to ensure that the mental health and well-being needs of the total population are met. MHE has longstanding experience and plays an important role in raising awareness and in combating the taboos, stigma, prejudice and social exclusion associated with mental illness.

By becoming part of a large mental health network, MHE’s members can learn first hand about new projects and initiatives pursued by mental health organisations in Europe, and they can contribute to influencing European health and social policy.

MHE members receive the monthly MHE Newsletter and other timely information and briefings on EU, Council of Europe and WHO related developments.

What members say about us

A series of interviews with members revealed some of the reasons why organisations and individuals based all over Europe find it useful to be a member MHE. The answers they gave include:

  • to find and maintain contacts with other associations involved in mental health;
  • to have access to information that is regularly updated by a Brussels-based network;
  • to ensure opportunities to participate in policy making at the European level;
  • to exchange examples of good practice, policy and legislation;
  • to afford consultation as a partner in European projects.

Which organisations and individuals are eligible for membership?

MHE welcomes new members who share its vision and whose mission is to promote positive mental health and well-being in Europe.

Membership is open to all organisations and individuals based in Europe.

MHE members represent not only non-governmental organisations involved in mental health promotion, prevention of mental disorders, advocacy for and the protection of human rights of people with mental health problems, but also associations of health professionals, health service providers, groups of users, ex-users of mental health services and volunteers, and those representing the families and carers of people with mental health problems.

MHE’s individual members are persons active or simply interested in mental health.

The goal of all of us who are involved is a Europe in which people with mental health problems live as full citizens with access to appropriate services and support when needed, and where meaningful participation is guaranteed at all levels of decision-making and administration.
